Why the plant is growing
The Savannah site opened in 2010 and builds large gas turbines used in power stations. Demand for electricity is rising sharply in the US, driven partly by new data centres, and utilities are ordering more turbines. Georgia Power, one of the plant's customers, is planning several gigawatts of new generating capacity.
The new space will be used to make gas turbine parts and add machining capacity. Local reports say the expansion is expected to double the plant's production capacity. Florida and Texas were also considered, but the company said the local workforce and access to ports and rail made Savannah the right choice.
Bill Newsom, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas, said the expansion would give the company's workers more advanced capabilities. Governor Kemp described the project as one that turns the region's opportunities into reality.
Training support
The project is backed by the Savannah Economic Development Authority, Georgia Power and Georgia Quick Start, the state's free workforce training programme. Quick Start often helps new employers train workers before and after they are hired, which can open doors to people without heavy industry experience.
Jobs likely to be in demand
- CNC machinists and machine operators
- Assembly and production technicians
- Welders and fabricators
- Maintenance and electrical technicians
- Quality inspectors and engineers
- Operations supervisors and planners
How to apply
The state's announcement points job seekers to Mitsubishi Power's Americas careers section on its official website (power.mhi.com). Construction has not yet started, so most of the 220 new roles will be advertised closer to the opening, but the plant also hires for its existing operations.
What it means for job seekers
- Skilled trades pay off. Machining, welding and maintenance skills are in strong demand at energy equipment makers.
- Look at local colleges. Technical colleges in the Savannah area often run courses linked to big employers.
- Plan ahead. With operations targeted for 2029, there is time to train for these roles now.
