A new warehouse for Cork
The biggest single project is a regional distribution centre at Little Island, costing around €200 million. It will be Lidl's fourth in the Republic, after Charleville, Mullingar and Newbridge, and is expected to be up and running by 2030. Distribution centres need large teams of warehouse operatives, forklift drivers, HGV drivers, maintenance technicians and supervisors.
Part of a national plan
The Munster spending is one part of a wider €600 million, five-year programme across the Republic, which includes up to 35 new stores. Lidl already employs more than 6,300 people in Ireland across 192 stores, its Tallaght head office and its distribution centres.
The company also highlighted its links with local food producers, saying it buys from 120 Cork suppliers and spent €136 million with them last year.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin called the plan a significant commitment to Ireland. Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland CEO Robert Ryan said it showed the company's long-term confidence in Cork and Munster.
What roles to expect
Lidl has not yet listed the exact jobs or store locations. Based on how its stores and warehouses are staffed, likely roles include:
- Customer assistants and shift managers in stores
- Store managers and deputy managers
- Warehouse operatives and team leaders
- HGV and transport staff
- Facilities and maintenance technicians
Store locations and opening dates have not been published, so the hiring will come in stages over the next few years.
What it means for job seekers
- Watch Lidl Ireland's careers channels. New stores are usually advertised a few months before opening.
- Retail experience helps but Lidl also hires people for entry-level store roles and trains them.
- Logistics workers in Cork should keep an eye on the Little Island project, as warehouse hiring will ramp up nearer to 2030.
- Construction trades can benefit sooner, with around 4,500 building jobs linked to the 25 projects.
