What the money will build
The investment has two main goals. First, the plant will produce more engines for hybrid and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), a fast-growing part of Hyundai's line-up. Second, assembly lines will be retooled so the factory can build the refreshed Santa Fe and the all-new Tucson, including hybrid versions of both.
With this project, Hyundai's total spending at the Montgomery site since 2005 climbs to around $2.2 billion.
What the leaders said
Governor Ivey described the deal as the next step in a partnership between Hyundai and Alabama that goes back 24 years. HMMA's chief operating officer, Mark Rader, said the investment reflects the company's faith in its Alabama workforce, while state Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair said it will help prepare local workers to build the next generation of vehicles.
Who might be hired
The company has not published a list of the 53 roles. Expansions like this usually need production team members, maintenance technicians, engine assembly staff, quality inspectors and engineers who understand electrified powertrains. The pay average is well above typical factory wages in the region, so competition is likely to be strong.
