Qatar Minimum Wage: QAR 1,000 Basic Plus Food and Housing Allowances

Qatar's minimum wage is QAR 1,000 basic for all workers, plus at least QAR 500 for housing and QAR 300 for food if the employer doesn't provide them. Here is what that means.

Qatar was the first country in the Gulf to introduce a non-discriminatory minimum wage that applies to everyone. If you are offered a job in Qatar, this is the lowest pay your employer can legally offer.

The minimum wage

Component Minimum amount
Basic wage QAR 1,000 a month
Housing allowance (if housing is not provided) at least QAR 500
Food allowance (if food is not provided) at least QAR 300

So a worker who gets neither housing nor food from the employer must receive at least QAR 1,800 a month in total.

Who it covers

The minimum wage applies to all workers in Qatar, of every nationality, in every sector, including domestic workers.

It was set by Law No. 17 of 2020, as part of Qatar's labour reforms. The same reforms let workers change jobs without an NOC.

How you must be paid

Salaries must be paid through the Wage Protection System (WPS) into a bank account in Qatar. Under updated rules, monthly wages are due on the 1st of each month and must be transferred within 7 days. Read: Qatar: salaries must be paid within 7 days.

Checking a job offer

  • Make sure your basic wage is at least QAR 1,000. Allowances are on top and do not replace the basic wage.
  • Check whether housing and food are provided. If not, the allowances must be paid.
  • Get the salary breakdown in writing before you travel.

If you are paid less

Keep your payslips and bank statements, then report the underpayment to Qatar's Ministry of Labour, which handles wage cases. You can also change employers without an NOC. See: Changing jobs in Qatar without an NOC.
