Why Amazon is doing this

Roughly one million young Britons are currently NEET (out of work and out of education or training), a ten-year high. Amazon says that last year almost half of the people who joined its operations teams came directly from school, college or unemployment.

Work experience and training

Amazon plans to grow its work experience programme from about 900 places in 2026 to more than 3,000 a year by 2030. Options include:

  • One-week placements for school pupils and young people out of work
  • Three-week online T Level projects
  • 45-day T Level industry placements, nine weeks inside Amazon teams

More than a third of last year's eligible T Level students went on to become Amazon apprentices.

Extra support

  • With the charity Barnardo's, Amazon will support 2,000 young people through its JOBS Project from 2027 to 2030.
  • The DFN Project SEARCH programme, for young people with learning disabilities and autism, will grow to support over 1,000 young people at more than 40 sites by 2030.
  • Amazon has joined the government's Youth Guarantee and will work with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
  • In 2027, new recruitment events will be held for young people in Merseyside, Stoke-on-Trent, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire, with DWP Youth Hubs.

Applicants aged 18 to 24 who are unsuccessful will receive a follow-up email with advice, free job-search support and a link to apply again.

What it means for job seekers

  • No CV is not an excuse to skip preparation. Read about the role, shift patterns and site location before you apply.
  • Check the commute. Many fulfilment centres are outside town centres, so make sure you can reach the site for early or late shifts.
  • Use it as a first step. Operations jobs can lead to apprenticeships, team leader roles and training.
  • Competition will be strong. UK vacancies are at a 12-year low, so apply early.
